2010 Census Officials Seeking Workers


   The local census office responsible for the 2010 Census operations in five Midlands counties is still recruiting. Most of the positions are for temporary census takers who will go door-to-door beginning May 1.    Census officials say their goal is to hire people from the areas where they will work. SC Unemployment Rate Ties Record


(AP) _ South Carolina's unemployment rate tiedits record high in January at 12.6 percent.   The numbers released Wednesday by the Employment SecurityCommission represent a slight increase over December's rate, whichthe agency revised downward from 12.6 percent to 12.4 percent.   The number of the state's unemployed rose about 4,600 people tomore than 273,000, a state record. Lake City Soldier Killed in Iraq


(AP) _ Two soldiers from South Carolina andGeorgia have been killed in a vehicle rollover in Iraq.   The Department of Defense announced Wednesday that 25-year-oldSgt. City Attorney Recommends June Special Election


City Attorney Ken Gaines has recommended to the Columbia City Council that a special election be held June 15th to fill the District II seat left vacant by Councilman E.W. Columbia Prepares to Move On Without Cromartie


City of Columbia mayor Bob Coble says he is ready to move the city forward after accepting the resignation of long time councilman, E. W. Cromartie.
