Two Columbia residents have filed to run for the city council seat recently vacated by long time councilman, E. W. Cromartie. Monday was the official first day of filing. In the running, as of late Monday afternoon, are Antonio Williams and Brian DeQuincey Newman. Another person who has plans to file Tuesday, is Harold ‘Puff’ Howard.

South Carolina ranks second lowest in the percentage of people who fill out and return the census form. The 58 percent response rate, beating only Alaska (56%) is 9 percentage points below the national average. It also means more federal tax dollars are required here to pay census workers to go door to door to get census information from households that did not respond. Monday, South Carolina lawmakers approved a plan to use almost two hundred million dollars in federal bailout cash to prevent cuts to health care. House Democrats say they want to use the federal Medicaid money to eliminate planned cuts to the Department of Disabilities and other health care areas.
